We leave on Sunday! For Barry, this trip has been a long time coming. He hasn’t been home since well before the pandemic. He wants to see family and friends, but due to increasing mobility issues doesn’t feel comfortable flying at this time.
I am Connie, a friend who has been giving Barry a hand for the last 6 or 7 years. I’m looking forward to getting on the road and seeing Newfoundland with a Newfie, which I’m sure will be an interesting experience 😄
We’ve been planning this trip for about 10 months now. Along the way there have been a number of obstacles. Back in the spring Barry was in and out of emergency with what turned out to be a horrible bout of shingles. It was extremely painful. Then as he got used to the nerve pain medicine he had a disastrous fall that put him in the hospital for several days. Thankfully nothing was broken! I visited him there each day, bringing him his daily double double. At that time he told me he was going to Newfoundland “even if it means I travel by ambulance or hearse.”
And this trip was intended to be a trip for three. Our friend Paul was going to do a lot of the driving, and I was going to spell him off since Barry no longer drives. Unfortunately Paul’s employer had other plans: when they restructured his department in August they cancelled his vacation. Which is totally not fair, but we had to regroup. I really couldn’t see cancelling the whole trip after Barry had worked so hard to book the ferry and the lodging. So — *gulp* — we adjusted the trip so that I could spread the driving out a bit.
This is my first time using Travelfeed as a blog platform, so please be patient as I set it up and tweak things. If Barry doesn’t wear me out too much 😂 I’m hoping to recap our day. Or at least post photos or video.
